Beating Shyness

When I was in the sixth grade, my teacher wrote the following comment on my report card:

“Jennifer is a good student, but she is so quiet that we often forget she’s there.”

Needless to say, I was a shy child. In school and in social situations, I preferred to let other people do the talking as I blended into the background. I had a group of friends, but rarely ventured out of my comfort zone to meet new people. During my college years, I decided to teach myself how to break out of my shell. My goal was to be confident in all social situations, without any exceptions. I began going to cafés, movies and restaurants alone in an effort to become comfortable just being with myself. I also tried new activities and enrolled in an acting class. While each new experience was challenging, each offered me a positive opportunity for growth and learning. But beating shyness is a challenge I still face every day.

While timidity in itself is not a bad thing (I’ve even been told it’s a sign of intelligence), if it gets in the way of our connecting with other people, it becomes a problem. Personally, when I am in a shy or insecure state, my ability to clearly express my thoughts or participate in new activities is compromised. Coming back into a state of confidence and balance can take time, but it’s definitely possible. We can all work with our shyness and access the confidence that lies within all of us.

 Practice makes perfect

Being confident and sociable is a skill that can be practiced like an instrument. Instead of being scared of social situations, we can see them as an opportunity to improve our skills. We can begin chit-chatting with new people, looking for things we have in common with them, rather than focusing on ourselves and how uncomfortable we feel. We can start small (saying hello to a stranger on the street) and work ourselves up to bigger things, like joining a public speaking group such as Toastmasters.

Change your mind

Every single thought we think is attached to a feeling. If we want to make any kind of positive change in our lives, we must become aware of the effects our thoughts have on our feelings and energy. Improving our thoughts is one of the best things we can do to change the way we feel when out in public. Richard Bandler, one of the co-founders of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), taught people how to make their internal mental states so positive and fun that they couldn’t possibly feel bad about anything! How many of you shy readers have ever had negative thoughts going through your heads while out at a party? Think about what kind of energy you give off when you’re thinking “I’m so uncomfortable, this is awful”. Chances are you won’t be approached by anyone if you have that kind of attitude. People would much rather approach a person who’s comfortable with him or herself, and who is thinking positive thoughts.

Know yourself

When it comes to shyness, knowing yourself is very important. Most of us aren’t shy 24 hours a day. In fact, most of the people I know (myself included) who call themselves “shy” are in reality, only “shy” for a few minutes each day, and in very specific situations. It helps to ask yourself in which specific situations are you shy. When out in public? In one-on-one conversations? In large groups? Etc.

Try this: think about a time where you felt at ease, comfortable and happy. Picture yourself laughing and having a great time, being present in the moment with other people. What were you doing? Where were you? Who were you with?

Now think about a situation where you felt shy and uncomfortable. Who were you with this time? Where were you? What was your relationship to the people you were with?

Now think about what the similarities and differences were between each situation. Is there any way that the first situation could more closely resemble the second?

Cleanse your energy

Cleansing your energy with reiki can help you shake off the sluggishness that holds you back from fully being present with other people. When you drag around negative thought patterns, old outdated beliefs or past traumas, it greatly affects your energy. With energy that is cleansed on a regular basis, negativity is more easily dissipated, and we generally feel much better. It’s easier to go through day to day life and we can get things done more efficiently.

Patience is key

Transforming from a wallflower into the life of the party doesn’t necessarily happen overnight. It takes time and practice. Knowing this and allowing yourself time to learn and grow will really help. Be kind to yourself, and be thankful when you take a step in a new direction. You’ll open up when you’re ready. It all starts with your decision and commitment to grow and learn.

Never Lonely

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share with you a poem written by my brother. Today is a fabulous excuse to celebrate love, whether you’re in a relationship or flying solo. Enjoy yourself and remember to give love every day!

Never Lonely

Looking up

at the leaves

I am never lonely

listen to them speak

my favorite road

runs through trees

one with the only

the sky told me

to reflect to the sea, now

I am never lonely

with this wonderful duty

to uphold

what was told

to die young or old

is no worry.

Ten of the Virtues of Reiki

1. Reiki works on all levels: physical, psychic, emotional and spiritual.

Reiki is a powerful tool which works on all levels, whether we are aware of it or not. It is not necessary to know what you want to accomplish during a reiki treatment; the energy will go where it needs to go to heal and increase your well-being on all levels.

2. Reiki is a holistic healing method that is extremely simple and pleasant.

One of the greatest things about reiki is its simplicity. All the recipient has to do is be open to receiving the energy, which cannot act in a negative way. Many people arrive to their first reiki session skeptical about whether or not the treatment will work. It is not necessary to have any particular belief system in order for reiki to work. Reiki is not about religion or spiritual beliefs. It is a relaxing and non-invasive healing technique that is open to everyone.

3. Reiki adapts itself to the needs of the receiver.

We all experience reiki treatments differently, as we all have our own specific needs. A person with insomnia might receive calm, quiet and peaceful energy, allowing her to fall asleep more easily at night. On the other hand, a lethargic person might become energetic after a session, which increases his motivation to get things done. The way we experience reiki treatments changes as do our needs and desires.

4. Reiki also works on animals, plants and situations.

Animals are very sensitive to reiki energy. Reiki can help them overcome behavioral problems, anxiety and pain. Some animals love reiki so much that they become loose, limp and relaxed as soon as the treatment begins. Plants are also very open to receiving reiki energy. Try chanting the mantra “Om” with your hands above a plant, plams down. Do this twice a day for a few days and notice what happens.

5. Reiki can reinforce and accelerate the natural process of healing.

Humans have incredible innate abilities to heal themselves. When the body’s energy is aligned and balanced, these abilities are able to function effectively. The more we practice energy hygiene, the more we become attentive to our bodies’ physical and emotional needs. We become better able to direct our bodies back to health after being out of balance.

6. Reiki can energize body and soul.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick self-reiki treatment to revitalize our energy. Even if we haven’t received reiki attunements, we can use the innate power we all have in our hands by simply placing them on the parts of our bodies that feel stress or pain.

7. Reiki can re-establish physical wholeness and spiritual health.

When our bodies’ energies are unbalanced, everything in life can seem “off”. We might feel less confident, exhausted, or even overexcited and agitated. It might seem difficult to perform simple day-to-day tasks. Our interactions and relationships with others may also suffer. Reiki can help bring us back into a place of balance, where we are at peace with ourselves and the world around us.

8. Reiki can regulate the energy system.

The more we practice balancing and cleansing our energy, the more this state of balance becomes our natural state. We can easily detect when we are out of balance, and direct our energies back into alignment more quickly than before. When we get used to a higher vibrational frequency, we attract people, relationships and situations with similar higher vibrations, as energy attracts its own level.

9. Reiki can dissolve blockages and enhance total relaxation.

Many people become so relaxed and calm during reiki treatments that they go into sleep-like states. This enhanced state of relaxation helps the body align its energies and dissolve energetic blockages more efficiently. Free of energetic blockages, the quality of sleep increases as does our ability to relax on a day to day basis.

10. Reiki encourages the elimination of toxins.

As reiki accelerates healing, toxins are often eliminated and released after treatments. Drinking plenty of water is encouraged, as is getting sufficient rest. It is normal to experience various physical or emotional symptoms as the body adjusts itself to reiki energy. Follow your intuition after a treatment and do not hesitate to ask your practitioner questions if you have them.

We are living in a very exciting time for reiki. Not only are individuals opening their minds to it like never before, hospitals and other institutions are beginning to use it as a complementary healing technique more and more frequently.  Reiki treatments are now being offered in several hospitals across North America and Europe for patients with cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. In fact, St. Charles hospital in Oregon is so pleased with its newly implemented reiki program, it invested in a billboard to advertise the service! As far as we know, this kind of publicity is a first for reiki. Let’s keep spreading the positive vibrations!

For those of you in the Montreal area, I’d like to inform you that I now offer insurance receipts for reiki and hypnotherapy sessions. I am registered under the Canadian Order of Practitioners in Naturopathy and Naturotherapy. If your insurance plan covers naturopathy, you may be partially or completely reimbursed for a reiki session! À bientôt!

The Benefits of Reiki While Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Hello readers! Enjoy the following guest post written for you by Emily Walsh from Em-musings, contributor to the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance blog. Thanks Emily!

***

Reiki is an energy therapy that promotes healing by placing your body in a deep state of relaxation. In this relaxed state, your body could permit your cells to go back to their natural state of well-being and balance. Reiki has a positive effect upon every form of sickness, from small things such as stomachaches and colds to systemic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Reiki can be especially effective in helping patients cope with the several challenges that can come up while undergoing cancer treatment on an emotional, mental and physical level.

On a physical level, reiki can assist in alleviating the side effects of traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. For instance, one of the more typical side effects experienced by many cancer patients is fatigue. Following Reiki treatments, patients are energized and have the ability to perform things they did not think was possible – such as attending a child’s play or going to the store. It provides patients with energy as they require it, permits them to relax as they require it, and allows them to rest better than they might without it. On an emotional and mental level, this exact same relaxation response could assist in calming the fear, worry and anxiety that go along with this disease.

Thus far, proof of the advantages of Reiki used for cancer patients has been anecdotal. But, many studies at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medication and the Cleveland Clinic are trying to discover scientific reasons as to how Reiki works. With associations such as the Society of Integrative Oncology, a multiple disciplinary association of experts, touting the benefits of complementary cancer recovery and treatment, newer methodologies, involving Reiki are getting more popular. More oncologists and cancer centers are starting to realize the advantages these treatments – at one time dismissed with snickers by the ones “in-the-know” – are offering those who do not know where to turn to solve problems such as the stress and pain related to cancer and its traditional treatments.

As with most complementary treatments, Reiki will take a holistic approach – treating spirit, body and mind – and is natural and safe. Most cancer patients who have used it note feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being after the treatment. Reiki will lead your body’s molecules to shake at an increased intensity, dissolving the energy blockages which cause disease as well as disharmony. It helps to ease stress, control pain, and lessen the side effects of chemotherapy, including nausea and additional debilitating issues for mesothelioma patients. It’s additionally considered to better immune function. The average mesothelioma life expectancy is around a year following diagnosis.

What we can say is that reiki, like many other complementary and alternative therapies, can play a role in comprehensive cancer care and better the livelihoods of those affected by cancer.

Hands On Healing

A few weeks ago, I had an interesting healing experience. It began when my friend and I were cooking dinner during a hot Montreal summer evening, and I started to develop a headache. Since I’m not one to tolerate much pain, I began reviewing my day, trying to figure out what could have possibly caused it. Was I well hydrated? Had I eaten a balanced diet that day? Was I tired? I decided to pour myself a glass of water and waited a few minutes for the headache to subside. After half an hour, it was ever present.

Growing grumpier by the minute, I complained to my friend about the headache. He approached me half-jokingly and told me to close my eyes. I did so willingly, curious to find out what his plan was. He placed his fingertips lightly on my forehead, closed his eyes and began to concentrate. He proceeded to massage my forehead gently, and as he did he told me the headache was leaving. I believed him, and imagined that with each breath, the headache was traveling out of my head with healing. He then removed his hands, told me to open my eyes and the next thing I knew, the headache was gone! He was shocked by the fact that his trick had worked, and I was delighted that he, without a background in reiki or hypnosis, had inadvertently combined those two very things! Since that evening, we have both used the technique on several different occasions, with similar results.

Stories of remarkable healings are no longer few and far between. It is becoming more and more common to learn of people healing themselves from cancers and other diseases using yoga, reiki, laughter, positive thinking, hypnosis or the strong belief that they are healing. In “Anatomy of an Illness As Perceived By the Patient” by Norman Cousins, the author recounts his experience of being diagnosed with a crippling illness, which doctors told him he would never recover from. He fully rejected that idea, used his own intuition and ultimately healed himself by eating a balanced diet, increasing his vitamin C intake and watching funny movies. He found that several minutes of belly laughter each day had very positive effects on his health, and reduced his pain greatly. No muss, no fuss, just some quality time with Abbott and Costello.

It’s about time we put down the pills and listen to what our bodies are telling us. On that note, click here to read a great new article about reiki for chronic pain management. Enjoy!

Appreciation

Here are some beautiful words of wisdom for those of you who may be feeling out of balance or restless today.

“No matter whom you are interacting with, we would like you to find some way of conveying to them your appreciation of who they are and where they are right now.  We would like you to be able to express to them, whether you use words or just a glance of an eye, I love you where you are right now and you will always find your path and it will be different from almost anybody you know. I know that you have guidance within you that will always keep you going to that which life is revealing to you. There is no one on the planet that you could adequately or accurately follow because you are carving out your own magnificent and unique life.  You have guidance within you that lets you know in every moment your relationship with your life as it is unfolding.  You are source energy in a physical body who has come to let the contrast inspire you to becoming more, and that a large part of you instantaneously became that more and that part of you is now calling you forward. You can use whatever method you want, call it gut instinct, emotional guidance, kinesiology, it doesn’t matter what you call it. You are being beckoned by that larger part of you toward that which you have become and if you can get that across to yourself or to anyone, than you or the one that you got it across to is destined to live happily ever after. To live the fulfillment of what you have come forth to live. And anything else anything other than that, anything that says there are rules you should follow and when you follow them you’ll feel better, or you are supposed to be something that you are not, or you are disappointing someone somewhere, or you’re not fulfilling your reason for being here.  Anything of that nature just separates you from the truth of who you are.” Abraham-Hicks.

Reiki For Insomnia

Few things in life truly frustrate me, but not being able to sleep is definitely one of them. Sleep is so important to me that I often go out of my way to make sure I rest peacefully every night. I keep my caffeine intake to a minimum, exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet, among other things. I also cleanse the energy in my home on a regular basis. But over time and with experience as a reiki practitioner, I have come to realize that when I experience a sleepless night, it is most often due to an imbalance in my own energy.

There are various physical, nutritional, environmental and emotional influences that affect our ability to rest peacefully. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as cracking open the bedroom window to allow fresh air to guide us to sleep. On the other hand, chronic insomnia could also signal a condition requiring medical attention. But it is often the result of a build up of stress, anxiety and the issues we neglect to attend to during our waking hours. Simply put, it is our body’s way of getting our attention. If we allow insomnia to persist, it can lead to depressed feelings, fatigue and anxiety which cause damage to our health and relationships. Reiki is a safe, effective and all-natural way to relieve insomnia and its side effects without sleeping pills.

As soon as the reiki treatment begins, the body begins to relax very deeply. The breath also deepens, nourishing and calming all muscles and cells in the body. Once we are completely relaxed, the anxiety that prevents us from getting sufficient rest begins to dissipate, and a deep sense of relaxation is restored. At this level, our energies begin to re-balance themselves, enhancing our natural healing abilities. Reiki resolves the causes, instead of just the symptoms of insomnia. Similarly to a sleeping pill, it knows exactly where to go in order to restore sleep. It always works for the recipient’s highest good. It is gentle, soothing and helps us get back on the path to good health and vitality. I highly recommend receiving reiki treatments if you have experienced one too many sleepless nights.
